Intimate Astoria Church Wedding
Getting married can be a stressful time for a bride. All the appointments, dress fittings, choices, etc. There’s so much information out there that it’s a real feat to wade through it all.
My grandfather pastors a charming little church built in 1884, on the hills of Astoria overlooking the Mighty Columbia River, where his parents attended upon their immigration to the USA from Norway. We knew when we got engaged that we wanted a cozy intimate wedding so this venue was a delightful choice.
The Oregon Coast boasts magnificent scenery in overflowing supply. After waking to enjoy the river views with a cup of my favorite coastal coffee blend, we met up with our photographer at the South Jetty where the Columbia River meets the Pacific Ocean, for a first look. The grandeur and rugged beauty did not disappoint. In the Pacific North West winters, rain is always a possibility, almost a surety but we were blessed with clear skies. What a lucky break.
Our marriage took place in the company of our closest friends and family back at the church under a statement arch of foliage. Flowers speak for themselves so I didn’t see the need for more decor just because society says it’s the thing to do. I love nature and it was all about the flowers for me.
It was so special to be able to feel present in this life changing moment. My advice to today’s bride-to-be, feeling the pressure of what society says your wedding should look like is, do what feels right to you. If that looks like a grand celebration with all your friends, do it, but if it looks like a simple elopement, do that. You’ll have a lifetime to appreciate the thought and care you put into doing things just the way you wanted. It’s your day!
